Meltcrete
About the Project
Meltcrete is a commercial building located in Sector 82, JLPL Industrial Area, Mohali, Punjab, India. Designed by Studio Ardete and completed in 2021, the project occupies a 4,500-square-foot plot with a built-up area of 9,000 square feet.
Context: Situated in a rapidly developing industrial area, the building was designed to stand out amidst the conventional structures. The south-west facing plot presented challenges in terms of heat gain and lighting, which were addressed through innovative design solutions.
Approach: The façade features a series of curvilinear concrete layers, creating the illusion of melting concrete—hence the name "Meltcrete." This design not only imparts a unique aesthetic but also makes the building appear taller. Metal silhouettes serve dual purposes as balcony fences and façade elements, enhancing functionality while maintaining visual appeal. The use of concrete as the primary material for the façade kept construction costs low, approximately ₹1,000 per square foot, about half the cost compared to conventional buildings of its kind.
The open layout plan allows flexibility for tenants, and the building adheres to local building norms. The design pays homage to the architectural legacy of Le Corbusier, aiming to inspire future projects in the vicinity.
